Handleless, Matt or Wood: Choosing Kitchen Fronts
A kitchen’s carcases, hinges and drawers are invisible. Its fronts are the kitchen — the surface every photograph shows and every hand touches. Häcker alone offers 31 front families across 20 materials, which is liberating for about ten minutes and paralysing after that. Three decisions cut the field down fast.
One: handled, or handleless
Handleless is not a single thing. Gola planning mills a grip channel into the carcase itself — a continuous recessed line, optionally lit, with nothing protruding into a walkway. Push-to-open removes even the channel, at the cost of fingerprints exactly where you push. A J-groove or routed lip cuts the grip into the front’s own edge.
Handles, meanwhile, are the cheapest way to change a kitchen’s character and the easiest thing to get wrong. If the kitchen is narrow, or small children run through it, the handleless argument is practical before it is aesthetic.
Two: the finish
- Matt has won, and deservedly — but ordinary matt lacquer shows every fingerprint. Anti-fingerprint matt surfaces like PerfectSense exist precisely because of this, and the difference on a dark front is not subtle. If you want dark and matt, insist on the anti-fingerprint grade.
- Gloss still reflects light into deep Indian kitchens better than anything else, and still shows every smudge and swirl mark. It suits a small kitchen with one strong light source and an owner who wipes.
- Real woodgrain and veneer is the finish that ages rather than wears. It is also the one that varies slab to slab, which is the point.
Three: the material behind the finish
Laminate is the workhorse: tough, water-resistant at the edge, and the reason a kitchen can be beautiful in a rented flat. Lacquer gives colour depth and the possibility of matching a front to almost any shade — 190 RAL and 2,000 NCS colours, inside and out. Veneer, stone, glass and linoleum sit above, each priced into its own group.
Which brings up the lever most buyers miss: fronts are how a German kitchen is priced. Every front inside a price group costs the same, so moving one family sideways within a group is free, and moving down a group is real money — without touching the carcase, the drawers or the hinges. The budget composition trick that works for appliances works here too.
Choose it under your own light
Decor samples change character completely between showroom spotlights and north-facing Indian daylight. Browse the full programme on Fronts & Finishes, then take the three finalists home and leave them on the worktop for a week. Whichever one still looks right on day seven is your kitchen — and a planner at any showroom will price all three against the same drawing.
